Cambodia has a rich cultural history that goes back to the so-called “Khmer” era, centuries ago. The famous temples of Angkor remind of that period. Unfortunately, a lot of art was destroyed during the 1970s by the Pol Pot regime which was called the Khmer Rouge – a reference to communism.
Choreographer Prumsodun Ok doesn’t want to lose this tradition and he has restored classical dance. Although he adds a surprisingly contemporary element: a touch of gay-eroticism. I went to watch a rehearsal and saw young Cambodians dance gracefully with each other.
